Unlike Kelingking beach, Peguyangan Waterfall is not so popular amongst tourists visiting Nusa Penida. However, if you love off-the-beaten-path places, I totally recommend checking it out! How to Get to Peguyangan Waterfall Peguyangan Waterfall referred to as Mata Air Guyangan by the locals is located on the southern coast of Nusa Penida. The nearby attractions are Tembeling Beach and Banah Cliff Point on the east and Manta Point on the west. The easiest way to get around Nusa Penida is to rent a scooter at the harbor. They usually cost around 75,000 IDR $5 US for a day. Although be prepared for a very bumpy ride! The roads on Nusa Penida are in really bad condition with many potholes so they can be very dangerous. If you’re planning to rent a scooter and even if you don’t please don’t forget about travel insurance! Unfortunately, accidents can happen anytime and it’s better to be prepared for that. After many hours of research, I decided to choose SafetyWing and I can honestly recommend them! You can use the below form to get a quotation tailor-made to your own travel preferences. If you don’t have experience in scooter riding I would recommend hiring a private driver or opting for an organized tour. Traveling in a car is not comfortable either, but at least you don’t have to worry about the road conditions. And having a seatbelt together with an air-con is a huge advantage too! When to Visit Peguyangan Waterfall Since Peguyangan waterfall is not so insta-famous yet you don’t need to worry about the crowd. Therefore you can basically visit any time of the day! However, it requires intense climbing to reach it from the parking lot more about this later so it’s better to do it in the morning when the weather is not so hot. What to Expect at Peguyangan Waterfall Arriving to the entrance There is no entrance fee for visiting Peguyangan Waterfall, however, you have to pay 5,000 IDR $ US for parking. Once you parked with your scooter/car you will see a little arch at the end of the road that marks the entrance to Peguyangan Waterfall. You will also find a small restaurant right in front of the entrance selling food and drinks. In case you forgot to bring some water definitely buy some at the restaurant! Trust me, you’re gonna need it later. At the bottom of the stairs, there is a sacred temple so you are required to wear a sarong. If you don’t have your own, you can rent it at the entrance for 15,000 IDR $1 US. It can be hard to climb the stairs wearing a sarong but you can take it off during the climb and put it back on when you reach the temple at the bottom. It’s important to know that although this place is called Peguyangan Waterfall, you will not find any real waterfall there. I will tell you more about it later! Me wearing a sarong at the bottom of Peguyangan Waterfall Going down the stairway As I mentioned before, a little arch marks the entrance to Peguyangan waterfall, and right after you cross it, you will see the iconic blue stairway going all the way down along the cliffs. To reach the bottom where the temple and the “waterfall” are, you have to hike down almost 700 stairs on the hillside. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted! The stairs are incredibly small and there are large gaps between them so you need to watch your steps! But apart from that, the walk down is not dangerous at all. I would recommend wearing comfy shoes for your own safety but I personally did it in sandals and there was nothing wrong with that either. It takes like 20-30 minutes until you reach the bottom. Although it can take a lot longer if you constantly stop for photos like I did! The view is absolutely beautiful during the hike, the scenery is just breathtaking. Just look at the below photos and see for yourself! What is at the bottom of Peguyangan Waterfall? If you were expecting a gorgeous waterfall at the bottom, you will be disappointed! Despite the fact the place is called Peguyangan waterfall there is no waterfall at all. At least not what you would expect. Three little spouts are marking the entrance to the sacred temple where the locals usually perform water blessings. Don’t expect a big building though, the temple is just a simple gate with a small outside area behind it. The sacred temple at the bottom Balinese people believe that if they take a shower under all of the spouts their spirit will be cleansed from evil. First, they have to shower under the tree with little spouts that mark the entrance. There is a fourth, bigger spout as well and they have to finish the ceremony under it to receive the blessings from the Gods. If you are interested, you can perform the ritual yourself as well! The three little spots and the big spout There is a small natural rock pool where you can take a dip in the water and admire the huge waves crashing into the cliffs. Watch out for the signs though, if it says “No swimming”, don’t get in the pool! After you’ve seen everything at the bottom and soaked in the view, it’s time to head back. You need to take the same stairway you used to get down. Unfortunately hiking up is a lot harder so don’t rush, take your time, and don’t forget to admire the views along the way once again! Peguyangan Waterfall is located on the west side of Nusa Penida, closeby to other worthwhile attractions like Kelingking Beach. You'll find the blue stairway down to the waterfall at top of a towering cliff. I've pinned the exact location below to help you find it. Note the name of the waterfall is actually Guyangan Waterfall on Google. Google Maps Pin "Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida" How to Get to Peguyangan Waterfall The best way to get to Peguyangan Waterfall and check out the rest of the highlights on Nusa Penida is to rent your own motorbike. You can get these from your accommodation or the many rental shops at the harbor port. A daily rental costs between 50,000 to 70,000 rupiah for a decent scooter. Alternatively, if you’d like to save the hassle of bartering, you can book one in advance on this website for 50,000 rupiah. Once you've got your set of wheels, follow the route to the pin above. Note that the roads are a bit sketchy on Nusa Penida, but they've definitely improved in the past couple of years. If you're planning on exploring the island, it makes sense to check out Kelingking Beach for sunrise, then drive down to some of the other highlights on the West Coast like Tembaling Beach, Teletubbies Hill, and Sekartaji Cliffs before returning to Peguyangan Waterfall on the return for sunset. Tip Bring a sarong if you have one. Peguyangan Waterfall is a sacred water temple. If you forget, you can "hire" one down at the waterfall for 5000-10,000 rupiah. Book the cheap ferry from Bali online Sanur Bali Ferry Transfer fast-boat Alternative Best of Nusa Penida in a Day While Nusa Penida is definitely smaller in Bali, I wouldn't say it's possible to check out all the attractions in a single day. Therefore, if you're only planning a day trip from Bali, you'll want bang for time. There are many different businesses running tours from Bali to Nusa Penida which have these itineraries down-pat. But, when booking, you'll want to confirm a few things Ensure its a fast boat Ensure all fees are paid upfront Pick one with snorkeling at Crystal Bay, Broken Beach and a visit to Kelingking Beach! To save you the trouble of searching and haggling, I've linked the best-rated and most bang-for-buck trip that includes a visit to Kelingking Beach below. The Blue Stairway to Peguyangan Waterfall Once you arrive at the pinned location above, you'll find a cleared area to leave your bike. As with most of the things to do on Nusa Penida, you'll need to pay the 10,000 rupiah fee to park your bike. You'll see a sign an obvious route down to Peguyangan Waterfall down that iconic blue stairway. This stairway is quite steep but shouldn't be much of a problem for most. It took us roughly 15 minutes to reach the bottom, snapping some photos along the way. Related Diamond Beach If you were expecting a towering waterfall like those found in neighboring Bali, you might be a little disappointed. The Peguyangan Waterfall is definitely not that. However, Peguyangan Waterfall, which locals refer to as Mata Air Peguyangan, is actually not considered a "waterfall", but a sacred spring. You'll notice a shrine at the base, with a large pipe redirecting the flow of water down the steep cliff face. If you're lucky, you might get to meet some locals who've made the pilgrimage down to the site. Related Tembeling Beach Peguyangan Infinity Pool Besides the photo-worthy blue stairway, perhaps the most alluring aspect of Peguyangan Waterfall is the awesome infinity pool. You'll find this further on past the shrine. This pool is man-made and rests under an overhanging rock face. It's a great place to relax and cool off. On days with big swell, you can witness huge waves break and crash over the back of the pool. We relaxed in the pool for a good hour, monkeying around with a few local kids who seemed to enjoy playing with my camera. The hardest part of the day wasn't the climb back up, but trying to keep my DSLR dry! Where to Stay in Nusa Penida Nusa Penida isn't a huge island, but there are several options to pick from when choosing where to stay. Below I've included my 3 picks for budget, mid-range, and luxury accommodation. Luxury Adiwana Warnakali Resort - This isn't the most expensive luxury resort on Nusa Penida but it's definitely one of the best! This resort is waterfront located with large, luxury suites and an incredibly included breakfast. Mid-range Jukung Cottage - This epic, beachside resort-style cottage retreat offers great bang for buck. It features a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, a bar, and a shared lounge. Budget Hostel Bukit Sangcure - This is the accommodation I chose in Nusa Penida. It's a cheap backpacker hostel that is close to the port and offers breakfast and bike rentals.
